The color you choose affects curb appeal, resale value, and how your home feels every day when you pull into the driveway. Here's how professionals approach the decision.
Start With What Doesn't Change
Your roof color, brick or stonework, and driveway are fixed. Your new paint color needs to work with these — not fight them. Take photos of your home and note the undertones in any fixed elements.
The 3-Color Rule
Most well-painted exteriors use three colors: a main body color, a trim color (usually lighter or darker), and an accent for the door and shutters. Keep the main body neutral and let the door be bold.
- Test large swatches — 12x12 minimum — on the actual wall
- Look at the color at different times of day
- Ask your painter for a free color consultation before committing
